Victory Overture of Battle: Behind the Award-Winning Orchestral Score
I am pleased to announce that my piece, "Victory Overture of Battle," received Second Prize in the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) American Music in the U.S. Armed Forces Composition Competition 2025.
This project was a significant milestone in Berklee College of Music’s Master’s in Film Scoring program. I developed an original orchestral piece from initial concept to a fully produced, record-ready score.
The Budapest Scoring Orchestra recorded the piece at Budapest Scoring Studios. The remote session was completed in 15 minutes over four takes. Experiencing the orchestra’s precise performance under such time constraints was remarkable.
Concept & Narrative Vision
"Victory Overture of Battle" is a high-energy orchestral work that balances dramatic tension, strong rhythms, and uplifting themes. My aim was to convey a cinematic narrative of conflict, resilience, and triumph by blending traditional orchestral elements with contemporary pacing.
Composition & Orchestration Mechanics
Brass and percussion establish the foundation. Bold brass fanfares and energetic percussion propel the music and create a sense of urgency from the outset.
Woodwinds introduce quick, interwoven lines above the brass, adding movement and brightness while maintaining clarity and lightness in the overall sound.
The main theme evolves throughout the piece, beginning in a mysterious minor key and progressing to a triumphant conclusion in a major key.
The Recording Process at Budapest Scoring Studios
Recording at Budapest Scoring Studios as part of Berklee's master's program elevated the piece significantly. With only 15 minutes and four takes to complete the recording, every detail—from score markings to click maps and part preparation—required meticulous advance planning. Reading everything, from soft, suspenseful solos to powerful full-orchestra moments, all with great clarity and Precision: The musicians delivered razor-sharp staccato string runs and commanding low-brass swells, resulting in a master recording that exudes cinematic polish and energy.
